University of California Health’s academic health centers are ranked among the nation’s best in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care and creating innovative pharmacy practices.

Leaders in quality patient care

Four UC Health locations are among the top 15 comprehensive academic health centers in the nation for patient care quality, according to Vizient, Inc., one of the nation's leading health care performance improvement companies.

For its 2023 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Awards, Vizient evaluated a cohort of 116 comprehensive academic health centers. For the fifth consecutive year, UC San Diego Health, No. 5, received the award. UCSF Medical Center, No.7, was recognized for the second year in a row. UCI Health, No. 10, was also ranked highly for quality leadership. In addition, UCLA Health placed No. 13.

“Our academic health centers follow high-quality standards of care and draw from innovative, data-driven solutions in order to provide exceptional clinical care,” shared UC Health Chief Clinical Strategy Officer Anne Foster, M.D., MPH. “Having multiple locations recognized among peer institutions of this caliber highlights the important resource for care that UC provides for people in California.”

This year, 784 participating hospitals were segmented into four cohorts for the Vizient Quality and Accountability Ranking. The ranking measured the quality of patient care in six domains: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity.

"UC's system of academic health centers are a critical part of California's health care safety net and are the destination for some of the most critically ill patients in the state,” said UC Health Chief Quality Officer Robert Cherry, M.D., M.S., who is also UCLA Health’s chief medical and quality officer. “UC academic health centers continually track and analyze patient metrics, which form the foundation for monitoring and improving health outcomes across the system.”

Innovation in pharmacy practices

Vizient also named winners of its Pharmacy Vision Awards, which recognize innovative practices for a new and expanded vision for pharmacy. UC academic health centers earned top honors in four of the eleven categories. UCSF Health received two awards – the Excellence in Integrated Transformational Practice award and the Professional Excellence award. UC San Diego Health was recognized with the John Kim Strategic Sourcing Award, and UC Davis Health won the Mark A. Johnson Analytics Award.

“UC Health is driven by our mission for public service,” continued Dr. Foster. “While we recognize and celebrate the recent recognitions, we remain committed to continuous learning and will use systemwide data to further support patient health and well-being.”
