The University of California’s academic health centers have once again been honored for their commitment to delivering quality inpatient and outpatient care.
Vizient, Inc., a health care performance improvement company, annually benchmarks the performance of hospitals and health systems in its national quality and accountability study. Now in its 20th year, the study tracks performance improvement through the Vizient Clinical Database, which provides data from more than 1,400 health care facilities on patient quality of care.
UC academic health centers are national leaders in comprehensive care
Two UC academic health centers were among the top 10 performers recognized in the 2025 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Ranking from Vizient, Inc.
The award recognizes top performers in the cohort group of 118 comprehensive academic medical centers studied. The study measures performance and identifies leaders in six areas: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient-centeredness and equity.
Both UC academic health systems have also previously earned the award:
UC San Diego Health, for the seventh year in a row
UCSF Health, for the fourth year in a row
Providing high-quality outpatient care
UCLA Health and UCI Health were also awarded the Vizient Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Award, which measures the quality of outpatient care in five domains: access to care, continuum of care, quality, efficiency, and equity. The two UC academic health centers were among five recognized nationally by Vizient.
"UC academic health centers – including UC staff, faculty, community physicians, nurses, and other clinical providers – are dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centered care that advances health for all Californians," said Robert Cherry, M.D., associate vice president of clinical affairs and Chief Health Officer for UC Health. "We are honored to again be recognized among the nation’s top performers and remain committed to continually improving safety, quality, and equity across the communities we serve.”
