UC’s health locations and clinicians are proud to serve as an essential part of California’s health care safety net system, providing high quality care to those in need regardless of whether individuals are insured or the type of health insurance they have.
As designated public hospitals, UC’s academic health centers help to create a more equitable and person-centered network of care for all Californians. Our health locations care for underserved patients from throughout California, from urban to rural communities.
Our academic health centers collectively are the:
Largest provider of Medi-Cal outpatient visits compared to other major California health systems
Second-largest provider of Medi-Cal inpatient days, despite operating less than seven percent of the hospital beds in California
Meeting the complex and specialty care needs of Medi-Cal members
UC's health locations offer services and capabilities that are not provided elsewhere or are very limited in availability, including 5 of California’s 8 Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Level 1 trauma centers, burn centers, comprehensive stroke centers, multi-organ transplants and traumatic brain injury clinics. In addition to inpatient hospital care, UC clinics serve Medi-Cal members in specialties such as behavioral health, gastroenterology, hematology, obstetrics/gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology, pediatrics and other fields.
Hospital and clinic care for children and youth with Medi-Cal
Complex procedures for children and youth with Medi-Cal
A home for cancer care for Medi-Cal members
Life-saving organ transplants for Medi-Cal members
The financial impact of Medi-Cal service
UC's not-for-profit academic health centers must generate sufficient revenues to sustain their operations. Reimbursement for services to Medi-Cal members only covers a portion of the total cost of a patient's care. We delivered $1.5 billion in Medi-Cal hospital services and faculty practice professional fees in FY23-24 for which we were not reimbursed.

Delivering $1.5 billion in uncompensated care for Medi-Cal members
At the University of California, our hospitals and faculty practices are key contributors to California’s system of health care for those in need, working alongside a public hospital safety net system that is increasingly under duress and financial strain. In FY23-24 alone, our health locations provided $1.5 billion in hospital and professional services for Medi-Cal members for which they did not receive reimbursement.
